WeTea: Sushi

We Tea 1

WeTea is an adorable little place tucked away towards the back of University Plaza. You can’t see it from the main parking lot, so very few people even know that its there. I first found out about this place through a good friend, who claimed they had the absolute best sushi in town. I had never even heard of the place, so I sincerely doubted her observation, but agreed to go with her to try it out. This was about a year ago, and I’ve been hooked ever since!

The premise of the place is very simple. She does sushi, a few other asian dishes (edamame, seaweed salad, soup, etc), and bubble tea. There are two couches up front, and three or four tables on the side. There’s also outdoor seating if you walk just outside the door. You order your sushi at the counter and it is made fresh, right in front of you. The ingredients are simple but delicious, and the prices are fantastic!

I recently took Matt to help me order a load of sushi rolls, and we decided on the Spicy Yellowtail, Spicy Avocado, Spicy Crab, Eel and Avocado, and Shrimp Ocean Mix Roll. The rolls are so much denser and fresher than you can find at Wegman’s, so ordering five rolls to split between the two of us was way too much. But hey, we had some for lunch the next day, so it wasn’t a total loss. My personal favorites were the Yellowtail, Ocean Mix, and Avocado. There’s just something about the way they do Avocado there that makes it extra creamy and delicious. What’s also great about this place is that spicy rolls usually come with the spicy mayo on the side, so you can decide how much of the sauce you’d like to have on each roll.

If you’re going for the first time, I definitely recommend trying one of the Ocean Mix Rolls. If is unique to this restuarant, and the crunch of the seaweed mixed with the quality of the sushi is divine. As you can see, the prices for each roll are super reasonable (even less expensive than Wegman’s). However, if you’re in a rush, it’s helpful to call ahead as they make everything fresh and you will have to wait about 15-20 minutes for a large order.

Obviously, Ebishura with the conveyer belt has a particular charm if you’d like to eat in (located on the other end of University Plaza). However, if you’re just picking up sushi for a night in, then WeTea is where it’s at! Just remember to bring your cash because they don’t accept credit cards. This may seem like a hassle in today’s day and age (trust me I use my card for everything!), but this place is family owned and operated and would not be able to afford the overhead that credit card processing entails…especially when the majority of orders are $2 or $3 for a bubble tea.

So next time you’re craving sushi, I urge you to remember WeTea! it’s small, charming, inexpensive and delicious!
